Vyavahāra

Vyavahāra means practical conduct, social dealings, and legal procedure within the order of dharma. In Vedic legal texts it covers contracts, debts, property, inheritance, testimony, disputes, and administration of justice. Its purpose is to provide objective standards for resolving conflict and protecting society from fraud, violence, and abuse of power. Truth, evidence, proportionality, and impartiality must guide decisions, since the authority passing judgment is also accountable before Bhagavān. Vyavahāra is not confined to a court. It includes everyday speech, promises, commerce, cooperation, and treatment of another’s property. A person may know śāstra and perform ceremonies, yet contradict dharma by deceiving or exploiting others. Karma connects every action with consequences, while rāja-dharma obliges a ruler to maintain just protection and daṇḍa. Rules must be applied with discernment and without favoritism based upon wealth, kinship, or social position. For a practitioner of bhakti, practical integrity is inseparable from service to Kṛṣṇa. Humility does not require tolerating abuse or concealing harm; seeking a just remedy may protect all jīvas. Under the guru and the Vaiṣṇavas, a devotee repairs faults, avoids litigation driven by revenge, and remains truthful even at personal cost. Hearing hari-kathā and chanting the mahā-mantra purify intention but do not replace accountability. Vyavahāra fulfills its purpose when external justice accompanies honesty, compassion, and awareness that every relationship belongs to Bhagavān.
