Prāyaścitta
Prāyaścitta denotes prescribed atonement for acknowledging and counteracting sinful action. It may include fasting, austerity, charity, pilgrimage, mantra recitation, or concrete reparation according to the offense and a person’s capacity. Its purpose is not to purchase impunity but to accept responsibility, restrain future wrongdoing, and restore orientation toward dharma. External penance loses value when repentance and determination to change are absent.
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam compares repeated atonement without transformation to an elephant bathing and then covering itself with dust again. Rituals may reduce reactions of karma without uprooting the desire that produced the conduct. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition therefore presents bhakti as deeper purification. By hearing hari-kathā, chanting the mahā-mantra, and serving Kṛṣṇa, the jīva develops higher taste and gradually abandons destructive tendencies.
The holy name’s mercy never authorizes deliberate sin committed in expectation of later absolution; that mentality is a nāma-aparādha. Under the guru and the Vaiṣṇavas, a practitioner admits the fault, repairs what can be repaired, and adopts safeguards against repetition. One also asks forgiveness from those harmed without demanding that consequences be forgotten immediately. Prāyaścitta reaches full meaning when external accountability accompanies inner conversion and leads to humility, righteous conduct, and sincere service to Bhagavān.
