Yugala-smaraṇa

Yugala-smaraṇa is devotional remembrance of the Divine Couple, Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, their forms, qualities, service, and eternal pastimes in Vraja. Yugala means couple and smaraṇa, remembrance. In the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition, this contemplation expresses the understanding that Śrī Rādhā personifies Kṛṣṇa’s loving potency and that the fullness of prema is revealed in their exchange. It is neither imagination of a mundane relationship nor projection of material emotion upon the Absolute. Yugala-smaraṇa belongs to an intimate sphere of bhakti and requires a foundation in śravaṇa, kīrtana, nāma-smaraṇa, regulated conduct, and service to the Vaiṣṇavas. Confidential pastimes should be heard from a source faithful to śāstra and guru-paramparā, according to the practitioner’s maturity. Premature imitation may turn contemplation into fantasy and strengthen the desires meant to be purified. The ācāryas therefore teach one to begin with the mahā-mantra, hari-kathā, and remembrance of the Lord’s names and qualities. Under the guru, the jīva neither claims the eternal associates’ position nor fabricates an identity from ambition. One begs for fitness to serve and allows the holy name gradually to reveal spiritual reality. Authentic remembrance is measured by humility, detachment, compassion, and steady service rather than displayed emotional intensity. Yugala-smaraṇa becomes pure when the heart ceases to seek personal enjoyment and contemplates Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa for their pleasure. Remembrance then becomes internal service and deepens the wish to serve through every outward action.
