Purāṇa

Purāṇa means ancient account and designates a class of Vedic scriptures conveying philosophical truth through histories, genealogies, cosmology, religious instruction, and descriptions of Bhagavān’s pastimes. Tradition lists eighteen Mahāpurāṇas and numerous Upapurāṇas. Their narratives encompass vast cycles of creation and dissolution, dynasties of kings and sages, social duties, sacred places, and spiritual paths adapted to people of differing dispositions. A purāṇa is classically characterized by topics such as primary creation, secondary creation, genealogies, periods of the Manus, and histories of royal lineages. Each work nevertheless develops distinct emphases. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition gives special authority to the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, called the spotless Purāṇa, because it presents pure bhakti and culminates in Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes. Other works, including the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, Padma Purāṇa, and Garuḍa Purāṇa, preserve essential teachings about Bhagavān, the jīva, karma, and dharma. Purāṇic narratives should neither be read solely as modern chronology nor dismissed as fiction. They use multiple temporal scales, symbols, and narrative forms to communicate a sacred vision of the universe. Readers need context, comparison with śāstra, and guidance from the guru and the Vaiṣṇavas, especially where instructions address particular audiences. Hearing a Purāṇa in devotional association becomes hari-kathā when it awakens remembrance, discernment, and service. Its highest purpose is not historical curiosity but purification of the heart and progress toward prema for Kṛṣṇa.
